Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
