Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
